TIPPECANOE Co., Ind. (WLFI) – There are some interesting characters hanging out along the trails of Prophetstown State Park, but these scarecrows do more than keep the birds away.
Ilana Plake and her mother Sonia Diaz were two of the many people who came to the park Sunday to tour the Trail of Scarecrows.
“Me and my mom had a great time, and we walked through the trails,” said Plake. “It was interesting and all of the scarecrows were nice to look at.”
The nearly two-mile stretch of trail displayed 20 scarecrows donated by the community. This is the fifth year for the event that raises money for new programs at the park. Prophetstown State Park Interpretive Naturalist Angie Manuel said it offers something different for visitors.
“For people who have walked and bicycled and hiked this trail for years now, they are going to use this trail in a totally new way,” said Manuel.
However, these aren’t your typical scarecrows. Manuel said they are made from reused and recycled materials.
“Our mission is to be kind to the earth, be gentle on the environment and using reusable things that normal people would just throw away makes great sense,” said Manuel.
Once on the trail, visitors are encouraged to pick their favorite and vote by donating as little as a penny. Plake said she already voted for her favorite scarecrow and said the experience made a lasting impression.
“It actually inspired us,” said Plake. “Now we are going to go home and try to make our own.”
The scarecrows will be on display until November 9.
