Every year, highway departments across Indiana construct multiple chip seal projects. Chip seal is a pavement surface treatment that combines one or more layers of asphalt with one or more layers of fine aggregate. Chip seal extends the life of a road by sealing cracks and preventing water damage, while also improving surface traction and protecting the pavement from oxidation and wear. It’s a cost-effective way to maintain roads.
US Aggregates® joins forces annually with its Heritage Construction + Materials sister company, Asphalt Materials, Inc. (AMI) during the chip seal season. In 2025, US Aggregates and Asphalt Materials, Inc. worked together to promote road longevity across Indiana. US Aggregates’ Ridgeville and Richmond locations provided the aggregates needed in the chip seal applications.
Chip seal is an application of asphalt emulsion followed by a layer of aggregate, rolled and embedded into the emulsified asphalt. The process can be repeated to create a double or triple seal. A polymer-modified asphalt blend can be added to improve stone retention while preventing water intrusion and providing quicker return to traffic times.
Asphalt Materials, Inc. Sales Representative Nate Jenkins highlighted that pavement preservation, including chip sealing, is essential for agencies to effectively maintain their roadway infrastructure. “Relying solely on full reconstruction is not a practical or financially viable option,” shared Nate. Chip seal is a cost-effective treatment that extends pavement life, saving taxpayer dollars.
US Aggregates Sales Manager Kari Reynolds shared that working with AMI has been great because of the shared industry experience. “Our shared customers appreciate the level of service, quality knowledge and communication both our companies provide,” mentioned Kari.
The long-term relationship between US Aggregates and AMI creates streamlined communication for highway departments. Both companies are now located in the same building and can work collaboratively to provide quicker turnaround times.
Asphalt Materials, Inc. Sales Representative Ben Hardy expressed that US Aggregates’ performance and product consistency make them an elite supplier. “Oftentimes, county chip seal programs can struggle when stone suppliers lack inventory,” shared Ben. By partnering with US Aggregates, AMI avoids inventory shortages and can confidently depend on them to meet the chip seal requirements of each individual highway county department.
As the 2025 chip seal season winds down, both teams are proud of the results achieved through close coordination with Indiana highway departments. They look forward to continuing this collaborative momentum as planning begins for an even more successful 2026 season.
